Most cars have nowhere for rubbish to go, so it collects in the door pockets, the cup holders and the footwell until someone clears it out at the gas station. This gives it one place. It straps to the back of a front headrest, or sits on the console or the floor, and holds 2.5 gallons, which is a week of ordinary driving for most people.

The inside is lined with a leakproof layer and sealed seams, so a half-finished drink or a wet wrapper stays in the bag rather than soaking through to the seat. The lid closes on its own after you drop something in, and a long hook-and-loop strap holds it shut on rough roads. Built-in panels keep it standing open, so you can use it one-handed without it folding in on itself. Two side hooks hold a bag liner in place if you like to use one.

Three mesh pockets on the outside take tissues, wipes or a spare bag. When you don't need it, it folds flat.

Looking after it

Empty it, then wipe the inside with a damp cloth. The water-resistant lining doesn't hold stains. Leave it open to air out now and then.

What it will not do

It isn't airtight. The lid keeps smells down, but food left in it for days will still let you know. It isn't a cooler either, so don't store anything you plan to eat in it.
