Seaweed, half a scoop on dinner. The cat has no idea it is happening.

Everything else sold for cat teeth asks the cat for permission.

A brush, a wipe, a finger in the mouth — they all depend on a cat holding still for something no cat has any reason to tolerate. Most owners try once, get scratched, and the brush goes in a drawer. That is not a discipline failure. Getting a cat to accept a brush takes about three weeks of daily desensitisation before the bristles ever touch a tooth, and almost nobody is told that before they start.

This asks the cat for nothing.

How it works

The active ingredient is Ascophyllum nodosum, a cold-water brown seaweed. It is not abrasive and it does nothing mechanically — it works through the body. Compounds are absorbed through the gut, reach the saliva, and change the way plaque sticks to the tooth and how quickly it hardens into tartar. Which is exactly why it works on an animal that is not cooperating: there is nothing to cooperate with.

The evidence

The Veterinary Oral Health Council reviews submitted trial data and awards a Seal of Acceptance to products that meet its standard. It keeps a separate register for cats, because most products sold "for dogs and cats" were only ever tested in dogs.

This powder is on the cat register, for both plaque and tartar — and it is the only non-prescription, non-food product on that list carrying both. You can check the register yourself at vohc.org.

Worth being precise about what the seal covers: it is this powder. The same brand's dental bites and scoopables are not on the cat register, and we do not claim it for them.

Using it

Half a scoop — the scoop is included — on wet or dry food once a day. Mix it in. Most cats do not react to it at all; a few notice the first day and then stop noticing. A 40g jar is roughly four months.

Before you buy, read this

Seaweed naturally contains iodine. One 330mg scoop contains about 0.198mg of it. The manufacturer advises avoiding this product in cats with hyperthyroidism, and consulting your vet about any thyroid condition.

Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common hormonal diseases in older cats, and older cats are exactly the ones whose owners worry about teeth. If your cat is over about ten, or has lost weight, or has never had thyroid bloodwork done — ask your vet first. We would rather lose the sale.

What it will not do

It will not remove tartar that is already on the tooth. Nothing you can buy will — mineralised tartar is bonded to enamel and comes off with a professional scaling under anaesthesia, which is the only way it comes off. It will not treat gum disease, and it will not reach the problem that matters most, which happens below the gumline where you cannot see it. It is not a substitute for a dental at the vet.

What it does is slow down the thing that causes all of that, every day, without a fight.

One thing to do right now, for free

Lift your cat's lip — go back, past the front teeth, to the big ones. Look at the line where tooth meets gum. If that line is red, or there is brown buildup, or the breath genuinely smells, book a vet appointment. That is not a cue to buy this. Nothing we sell addresses what is already there, and we would rather tell you that than take your money.

If it looks clean, this is how you keep it that way.
